Neighbors: Colo. shooting suspect faced eviction

Formal charges are expected to be filed in court on Monday against alleged Colorado movie theater shooter James Holmes.

By NBC News wire services

AURORA, Colo. - Colorado shooting suspect James Eagan Holmes was likely facing eviction from the Aurora apartment that authorities say he booby-trapped with explosives, neighbors said.

Holmes, a former University of Colorado graduate student, is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others in a shooting rampage at a midnight movie premiere of "A Dark Knight Rises" on July 20, and wiring his apartment with enough explosives to have leveled the building if they had detonated.

Colorado prosecutors were due to file formal charges Monday against Holmes.

Neighbors and students in the North Aurora neighborhood where Holmes lived said his withdrawal from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus a month before the shooting would likely have triggered his eviction from the building, which is reserved for people affiliated with the school.

Officials at the University of Colorado have said Holmes was enrolled in the school's Ph.D. neuroscience program, but he withdrew last month.

Nine days before the shooting, Holmes was seen on Paris Street, asking landlords and neighbors if anyone was aware of a vacant apartment in the area, several neighbors told Reuters.

As many as 12 people were killed and 50 injured at a shooting at the Century 16 movie theatre in Aurora, Colo. early Friday during the showing of the latest Batman movie.

Holmes was arrested in the movie theater parking lot shortly after the shooting, and told officers his apartment contained explosives, police said.

Law enforcement officials told Reuters the third-floor Paris Street apartment was rigged with 30 homemade explosives, chemicals designed to accelerate a fire sparked by the bombs, and trip wires to trigger the blast as soon as a person attempted to enter the booby-trapped apartment.

The building was evacuated. But the explosives were later safely dismantled and removed by authorities, and Holmes' neighbors returned to their homes.

'Eyes kept fluttering'
On July 11, at around 3:30 p.m, Holmes approached neighbor Carl Pedro Allen, 54, who was sitting in front of 1733 Paris Street -- about a block away from Holmes' apartment building. Holmes asked Allen, and others gathered there, if they knew of any vacant one-bedroom apartments.

"We let him know there were no vacancies, but we told him about where he might be able to find an open apartment," Allen said.

Holmes was wearing jeans and sneakers and described himself as a local student, Allen said. But Allen also said he noticed something strange about Holmes' eyes.

Law enforcement officials have said that alleged gunman James Holmes sent the package to the University of Colorado medical center in Aurora. It was said to contain detailed writings about 'killing people' and it was Holmes himself who told police where to find it. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

"His eyes were fluttering and blinking," Allen said. "It was really weird. I didn't know if he was high or what, but those eyes kept fluttering."

Two others who witnessed the incident, Ashley Jones, 25, and Rosando "JR" Causus, a maintenance man at 1733 Paris Street, independently confirmed Allen's story.

At Holmes' initial court appearance last week, observers said his eyes fluttered wildly and he blinked repeatedly. He is due back in court on Monday.

Joan Holley of Holley Realty, which manages the building at 1690 Paris Street where Holmes lived, could not be reached for comment. She had previously told Reuters that she would not comment on matters related to the building.

Theater shooting suspect James Eagan Holmes appeared in court for the first time Monday where a judge explained why he was being held on no bond. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

Kylina Washington, 14, said she and her friend Asia Quinn spoke with Holmes around the same time Allen said he did, behind a 7-Eleven where clerks recognized Holmes as a regular customer.

"He said he was moving," Washington said.

Colo. theater lacked security

Tori Everhart, 27, a resident in Holmes' building, said Holley Realty representatives told her the building was reserved for University of Colorado students, faculty and staff.

A second student resident, who was moving his belongings out of a second-floor apartment and into a U-Haul truck on Saturday afternoon and declined to give his name, confirmed the policy.

"Only residents and faculty can live here," he said. The student said withdrawal from the school would require a resident to leave within a month.

Report: Doctor treating Aurora suspect had medical reprimand

A third student exiting the complex, who also declined to allow her name to be used, confirmed the policy.

Friends in Southern California, where Holmes grew up, describe him as a smart, sometimes awkward youth fascinated by science. He came to Colorado's competitive neuroscience doctoral program in June 2011. A year later, he dropped out shortly after taking his year-end exam.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Travel and Leisure Magazine: RDU's Terminal 2 among 'Coolest New

In its July issue, Travel + Leisure shown its spotlight on the ?Coolest New Airport Terminals.? RDU?s Terminal 2 was included on the list for its architecture, including long-span wood trusses (the first of their kind in any airport), a nod to the region?s heritage of furniture-makers and craftsmen, hanging artwork and abstract DNA sequences. Terminal 2 was also given kudos for the three ticketing counters, which reduce congestion at check-in.

RDU breaks ground on Terminal 1 makeover

Raleigh-Durham International Airport officials broke ground last Thursday on a $68 million makeover for its aging Terminal 1, referred to by many area travelers as ?the big blue box.? The renovation, which is expected to be finished in January 2014, will expand ticketing, security checkpoint and baggage claim areas and add shops, restaurants and other amenities for travelers. All airlines except Southwest and AirTran have moved to Terminal 2 to accommodate the renovation. Airport officials said the renovation is being paid for with revenue from parking, restaurants and leasing fees from the airlines.

NY's transportation agency projects deficits from 2012

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority expects to end 2012 with a $46 million cash surplus, officials said on Wednesday, as they unveiled a "risk-laden" financial plan that projects deficits for 2014 through 2016.

Balancing the MTA's budget depends on negotiating a three-year contract with unionized transit workers that has no wage hikes unless current restrictive work rules are amended or workers would pay more for healthcare, officials said.

"Our budget is fragile; I prioritize it probably as our No. One risk," Chairman Joseph Lhota told reporters after a board meeting. "Layoffs are not on the table," he said, adding he hoped to negotiate a new labor agreement by year-end.

Officials said such an accord would save the MTA $307 million and noted the MTA's managers have not had a pay increase since 2008.

John Samuelson, president of TWU Local 100, said transit workers deserved a cost of living increase. "We're not eating three zeroes," he said.

The authority runs New York City's buses, subways, commuter railroads and some major bridges and tunnels.

There is a precedent that could make the MTA's labor negotiations more difficult. Chief Financial Officer Robert Foran said another transit union had won raises of 4 percent in each of the first two years, followed by a 3 percent increase in the third year.

The MTA said in a statement that after another positive balance of approximately $46 million in 2013, it was projecting a $129 million deficit in 2014, a $14 million deficit in 2015 and a $231 million gap in 2016.

Those estimates include the $450 million the MTA expects to raise from toll and fare hikes it plans to start on March 1, 2013, 60 days later than initially scheduled. It also plans another toll and fare increase in 2015 to raise $500 million.

The MTA's current budget is nearly $13 billion, and Foran said non-discretionary costs were the main factors creating the outyear budget gaps. Those expenses include pensions, energy, healthcare, debt service and paratransit transportation for the disabled, all of which have been rising at multiples of the 1.8 percent inflation rate.

From 2011 to 2013 the cost of those five items is projected to rise by $1 billion, and by another $1.5 billion by 2014, Foran said.

In 2013, the MTA expects to spend $4.2 billion on payroll, $2.3 billion on debt service, $1.4 billion on health and welfare costs, and $1.3 billion on pensions, according to a briefing book. Fares paid by passengers should raise nearly $5.5 billion, while motorists will pay almost $1.6 billion in tolls.

The MTA gets a portion of taxes collected in the state, which should bring it $4.7 billion.

This year, the authority expects to save nearly $700 million through a variety of measures, including a 20 percent cut in the number of managers working at its midtown Manhattan headquarters.

From 2013 to 2015 the total savings target is $2.33 billion, which partly will be achieved by getting rid of 3,000 cell phones, 2,100 computers, 2,100 servers and 325 fleet cars.

Botiful Is The Telepresence Robot We?ve All Been Waiting For

56bade87c9e20b5475b661533d635946_largeWe've seen a few telepresence in our day, including the incredible AnyBot, but this little guy looks like it may make life at the office a little less weird and a little more bearable. It's essentially a little telepresence platform for your Android phone (if the creator, Claire Delaunay, nets $100,000 she'll make an iPhone version) that roams around and lets you chat with people in the vicinity. Think of it as a little robotic dog wearing your face.

Google, eBay, Amazon, Facebook back new lobbying group

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Google Inc, Amazon.com Inc, eBay Inc, Facebook Inc and other big Internet companies are starting a trade association to handle political and regulatory issues in Washington, a person close to the group said on Wednesday.

The Internet Association, which will open its doors in September, will act as a unified voice for major Internet companies, said President Michael Beckerman, a former advisor to the chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives' Energy and Commerce Committee.

Beckerman would not identify the association's members or discuss which issues the group will focus on. But the source confirmed that leading members were Google, Amazon, eBay and Facebook.

Internet companies have been lobbying recently on issues as disparate as easing visa restrictions to hire overseas engineers, revenue repatriation, privacy, cybersecurity and sales taxes for Internet companies.

"We want to educate (lawmakers) about the impact of the Internet in their congressional districts," said Beckerman. "In September, we'll do a full rollout and announce companies and announce policy positions."

Google and Facebook have been steadily ramping up federal lobbying spending.

Google, the world's No. 1 Web search engine, increased federal lobbying spending by 90 percent year-on-year, spending $3.92 million in the second quarter to lobby the U.S. Congress, the White House and various federal agencies, according to required filings disclosing lobbying.

The company, which is being investigated by antitrust regulators in the United States and Europe, lobbied officials at the Federal Trade Commission, the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Commerce.

Facebook boosted its spending on federal lobbying by 200 percent in the second quarter, spending $960,000 on issues including online privacy and immigration reform.

The world's largest online social network with 900 million users, Facebook said it lobbied lawmakers on market structure and initial public offering issues during the quarter.

In May, Facebook became the first U.S. company to go public with a market valuation above $100 billion. But the market debut was marred by technological glitches on the Nasdaq exchange and criticism that the IPO was priced too high.

EBay spent $400,600 dollars on lobbying in the second quarter, up about 10 percent from the same quarter in 2011. Its lobbying efforts focused on piracy and counterfeiting, air pollution and revenue repatriation, according to disclosure filings.

Amazon spent $690,000 in the second quarter, up about 25 percent from the second quarter of 2011. Its lobbyists worked on issues including sales tax, privacy and advertising.

Katherine Jackson Is 'Fine,' Confirms Custody Change

After going missing, Katherine says she has temporarily lost custody of Michael's children.
By Gil Kaufman

<P>After a <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/07/23/michael-jacksons-mother-not-missing/">mysterious disappearance</a> that set off a wild <a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/07/25/fight-details-janet-and-paris-jackson/">war of words (and fists)</a> and splashed her family's business all over the media, Katherine Jackson broke her silence on Wednesday night in an attempt to set the record straight.</P><P>"I am here today to let everybody know that I am fine and I am here with my children, and my children would never do a thing to me like that, holding me against my will," she told <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/katherine-jackson-court-hearing-based-bunch-lies-exclusive/story?id=16857775&page=2#.UBEzD47v3iR" target="_blank">ABC News</a> in a statement that denied rumors she'd been kidnapped or held against her will by a group of her children. Surrounded by children Janet, Jermaine and Rebbie, as well as Rebbie's daughter, Stacy, Katherine spoke to ABC, but would not allow the network to ask her any questions. "It's very stupid for people to think that. But anyway, I am devastated that while I've been away, that my children, my grandchildren, have been taken away from me, and I'm coming home to see about that, also."</P><P>On Wednesday, a judge temporarily stripped the Jackson family matriarch of her guardianship duties for late King of Pop Michael's three children, Prince, Paris and Prince Michael II ("Blanket") handing responsibility over to their cousin, TJ Jackson. In appointing TJ, 34, son of Tito Jackson, as the new guardian for the children, the judge the judge may have further stirred the pot in what appears to be a tug-of-war between Michael's adult siblings over the late pop icon's estate. During an emergency guardianship hearing, the judge said he was not suspending Katherine for any wrongdoing, but said that she was being blocked from carrying out her guardianship by unnamed third parties, which TMZ speculated were siblings Randy, Janet, Jermaine and Rebbie.</P><P>Katherine said she had spoken to TJ (as well as Prince and Paris) and that she had left him in charge of the children when she left town more than a week ago to get some rest at a ranch in Tucson, Arizona. "I never leave home without leaving instructions of who to stay there with them," she said, noting that during her leave taking "someone" had fired the cook, the nanny and the housekeepers at the family's Encino, California, estate without her knowledge.</P><P>"I told him it wasn't necessary for him to go down and sign for guardianship," she said of TJ. "I don't know who instructed him to do that ... but he wanted me to come home before that happened, but the ruling in court today was about the guardianship and I think it was based on a bunch of lies, but I have a good idea who's doing that and who's behind that."</P><P>Katherine, 82, did not specify who she thought was behind the decision to temporarily rescind her guardianship, but she thanked her children for realizing that she needed a "short vacation." She also explained that the reason she didn't call for more than a week was that, "I just gave up my phone and I didn't want to have any phone calls while I was here." She also noted that her assistant had been in touch with TJ and that she "put everything in order" before she left Los Angeles on July 15.</P><P>"Because there's a lot of lies that have been put out there and I am going home to straighten them out and this kind of stuff doesn't make sense," she concluded. "So I want to say goodbye and I am on my way home."</P><P>One of Katherine's lawyers, Perry Sanders, said in court that he vigorously opposed a permanent move to strip Katherine of her guardianship and that when she returns to Los Angeles he will file a motion to reinstate her as guardian. The judge also ordered that the children not be removed from California without a court order and that backup guardian Diana Ross and Debbie Rowe, biological mother of the two oldest children, also be informed of the order to keep the kids in the state.</P><P>The temporary guardianship will be reviewed at a hearing scheduled for next month, where it's possible that Wednesday's action could be reversed.</P><P>While Michael's will gave Katherine custody of his children and a 20 percent stake in his massive estate, her husband, Joe Jackson, and the eight surviving Jackson siblings were completely cut out. Some of the siblings have reportedly been exploring a move to have the will invalidated by arguing that Michael was in New York on the day that the document was notarized in Los Angeles.</P><P>In a video that surfaced earlier this week, Janet Jackson is seen trying to take a cell phone away from Paris, 14, and berating her niece for using her phone to tweet about family business. That video leaked after Janet, Jermaine and Randy Jackson reportedly attempted to persuade Paris and Prince, 15, to leave Katherine's home on Monday. Both resisted and a short time later, sheriff's deputies arrived to break up a scuffle between Randy, Jermaine Jackson and TJ.</P><P><a href="http://rapfix.mtv.com/2012/07/24/fight-at-michael-jacksons-mother-house-police-called/">MTV News</a> reported that police were called to the scene but did not make any arrests.</p>

Many drugs remain legal after "bath salts" ban

(AP) ? People are inventing so many new, legal ways to get high that lawmakers can't seem to keep up.

Over the past two years, the U.S. has seen a surge in the use of synthetic drugs made of legal chemicals that mimic the effects of illegal stimulants.

The drugs are often sold at independent stores in misleading packaging that suggests common household items like bath salts and plant food. But the substances inside are mind-altering drugs that have been linked to violent behavior.

President Barack Obama signed a bill into law earlier this month that bans the sale, production and possession of more than two dozen of the most common bath salt drugs. But health professionals say that there are so many different varieties that lawmakers are playing catch up.

life as we know it...: Part two...planning a baby shower

Welcome to part two of planning a baby shower the mum-to-be will love!

  • we've consulted with the mum-to-be
  • picked out a theme
  • gathered inspiration
  • found a location, and
  • sent out the invitations.

Now it's onto the really fun stuff...planning all the little details that will make the baby shower fun, festive and memorable. The theme that you've chosen should be carried through all of the details, to make your baby shower feel cohesive.

Let's decorate...
There are plenty of ready-made party decorations available on the market. Head to your local party supplier or check out online party stores for all your needs. ?If you're feeling crafty and wanting something a little more unique, you could make them yourself to match your theme. ?Your decorations could be as simple and inexpensive as tissue paper pom poms, bunting or a banner, bunches of balloons, or a posy of flowers. ?Colour can be easily added to your party through table cloths, napkins, platters and more. Colour coordinate your party foods to go with your theme too! If you're having fairy bread, stick to one colour sprinkle such as pink or blue; colour your cupcake icing to match, or pop in a cupcake topper.?Here's a few examples...
Every party needs a cake...
Everybody loves cake. It doesn't matter if you're 8 or 80...the cake is the centerpiece of every party, and probably the most photographed aspect of the event...aside from the guest of honour of course. ?The design of the cake is just as important as the flavour. ?Indulge the mum-to-be, and have the cake made in her favourite flavour, then decorate it to suit your theme. Bake it at home, or hire a cake maker to create one for you...but bear in mind, purchasing a decorated cake can be expensive, so make sure you factor that into your party budget. ?The only limit is your imagination!
What to feed the guests... The food and beverages you serve at your baby shower will depend on the location, the time of day, and the season. ?Most baby showers are held as a morning or afternoon tea, making finger foods the perfect thing to nibble on. ?Ensure you have a good balance of sweet and savoury morsels. ?Four-six different options of each would be appropriate, and don't forget a vegetarian option or two. ?Once again, utilise pinterest to collect recipes as you research ideas for your event. ?Seek help from family and friends to help bake and cook...they will be honoured to help out! ?Most recipes can be made ahead, saving you time on the day of the baby shower.

Having fun at a baby shower can be thirsty work. Mix up a big bowl of delicious fruit punch, make use of your coffee maker, and purchase some fruity teas for your guests. ?Pitchers of cool water are always appreciated. The big question... will you be making alcohol available to your guests??Decide whether or not your baby shower will be a "dry"?event.

Get your game on...
There are pages and pages of websites that cater for baby shower games, such as Baby Shower 101. Games are fun, and they give your guests something to do during the party. They can be corny and cliche, but they definitely get the party started. ?Three to four games is plenty for a two hour baby shower.

An alternative to the traditional games is to get a little crafty...have your guests make headbands and hair clips for the baby, or perhaps hand paint baby clothes. ?Advice cards to the mum-to-be are a really nice keepsake that can be filled out by the guests at the party, and included in a baby album afterwards.

Don't forget to take photos...
Do you have a friend that is handy with a camera? Invite them along to take photos for the mum-to-be of her special day. As the hostess, chances are you won't have time to capture those memories. ?A photographer can capture all of the little memorable details, the guests, the gifts, the fun and frivolity, that you have spent so much time planning for. ?The mum-to-be will love looking back on the baby shower, and a photo album would make a lovely gift. ?Take it one step further and set up a fun photo booth with props! Your guests will have so much fun playing!!

It's polite to say thank you...
As your guests leave, it's a nice gesture to give your guests a thank you gift. This doesn't need to be expensive...cartons of popcorn with "ready to pop" on the tag; individually packaged home made biscuits; or perhaps a bar of chocolate wrapped in a thank you message. A small gesture to say thank you, you're presence at the baby shower and your gifts are truly appreciated.

So, that's the party organised...but what about the guests? Stay tuned for baby shower gift ideas.

Osbourne tweet: done with 'America's Got Talent'

(AP) ? Sharon Osbourne says she's ready to say goodbye to "America's Got Talent."

Osbourne took to Twitter on Tuesday, addressing "my darling" fellow judge Howard Stern and saying, "money is not the reason I'm not returning" to the show. Her tweet trailed off with "it's because ...." and didn't elaborate.

NBC said Osbourne hasn't informed the network that she intends to leave "America's Got Talent," which is now airing its seventh season. The series added Stern to the judges' panel and moved from Los Angeles to New York this year to accommodate him.

Osbourne's representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

(AP) ? James Holmes spent a year in a small neuroscience doctoral program, surrounded by scientists and roughly three dozen classmates delving into the inner workings of the brain.

The University of Colorado, Denver, isn't saying if they had any warning signs.

Experts say, however, the intimacy of the program and its focus on the brain may not have been enough for staff and students to detect that Holmes was on a course that police say ended with a deadly rampage at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie.

Supported by a prestigious federal grant, Holmes, 24, was in the first year of a program at the Anschutz Medical Campus dedicated to neuroscience, studying such topics as how the brain works or malfunctions or helping develop drugs to treat epilepsy and other disorders.

But it is not behavioral science or psychology, experts say.

David Eagleman, who runs the Initiative on Neuroscience and the Law at Baylor University, said some neuroscientists are experts in mental illnesses and aberrant behavior, but others spend most of their time studying molecular chemistry.

"It's really only a fraction of professors" who could identify a simmering mental disorder, Eagleman said. "Many people in neuroscience are not specialized in the issue of picking up mental illness ... There are plenty of people who just study mice and cats and stuff like that."

Holmes is accused of methodically stockpiling weapons and explosives at work and at home that police say he used to kill 12 people and wound 58 more at a movie theater Friday in nearby Aurora. Police say he also booby-trapped his apartment with the intent to kill police officers.

Holmes' arraignment hearing is on Monday.

Attention continued to focus on victims of the attack and their grieving families, many of whom turned on Tuesday to the grim task of preparing for funerals. Batman star Christian Bale visited survivors of the shooting and stopped by a makeshift memorial to victims near the movie theater where they were shot.

Authorities say Holmes began shopping for firearms while studying neuroscience. He joined the program in June 2011 after receiving a National Institutes of Health grant to cover his tuition and provide a $26,000 annual living allowance.

The school refuses to say what specifically Holmes studied. But an online syllabus listed him as making a presentation in May during a class called "Biological Basis of Psychiatric and Neurological Disorders."

In early June, Holmes took a standard oral exam that ends a graduate student's first year. The school will not say whether he passed, but Holmes filed paperwork to withdraw from the program just days later. He never provided a written explanation for his departure.

"He had, as is now common knowledge, excellent academic credentials," said Barry Shur, dean of the university's graduate program.

Shur said the graduate program is "like a family" in which faculty carefully monitor students' progress.

"It would be a logical step to assume there were people in that program who worked closely with him and would have the expertise to assess his behavior," said Mary Ellen O'Toole, a former FBI profiler and the author of the book "Dangerous Instincts: How Gut Feelings Betray Us."

"But being able to recognize concerning, troubling behavior does not mean you can prevent a mass homicide," O'Toole said. "There are many people at a university level who act quirky and strange and don't go out and commit mass murder."

Academics studying the human brain may not have the same ability to size up threats as someone who makes his living spending time with people firing guns, O'Toole said.

Glenn Rotkovich, owner of a private Colorado gun range outside Denver, quickly concluded there was something wrong with Holmes.

Holmes applied to join the range in late June. But Rotkovich said that after calling Holmes back and hearing a "bizarre" voice mail message ? spoken in a strange, low-pitched voice with heavy breathing ? he concluded he didn't want Holmes as a member.

"I flagged him to people and said, if he shows up, I don't trust him," Rotkovich said.

Holmes apparently never went to the range.

The university's silence on the year Holmes spent there contributed to the mystery surrounding his motivations. Administrators refuse to say whether faculty or students saw signs of dangerous behavior in Holmes. Campus police said they had no information on Holmes before the attack.

Holmes remained in solitary confinement Tuesday in Arapahoe County jail, a day after appearing bleary-eyed and disoriented in his initial court appearance. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

Working to build their case, a team of lawyers from the district attorney's office spent about 90 minutes inside the movie multiplex where the shooting occurred. Crews were starting to encircle the building with a chain link fence while people continued to flock to a memorial nearby for the victims.

Relatives of those who died were bracing for a string of funeral services, the first of which ? for Gordon Cowden, the oldest of those killed ? was planned for Wednesday. Meanwhile, a woman whose husband remains in a coma after being shot in the head gave birth to a healthy baby boy in the same hospital Tuesday.

A profile for a man whose name and appearance matched Holmes has been removed from a dating website. Match.com spokesman Matthew Traub on Tuesday confirmed reports on TMZ.com and elsewhere that the profile was posted before the movie theater massacre. Traub would not comment on whether Match.com believes Holmes actually posted the profile.

The profile included the question, "Will you visit me in prison?" and said, "I spend a lot of time thinking about the future, mind (equals) blown."

The profile photo showed a man whose hair is reddish orange, similar to Holmes' hair when he appeared in court Monday.

New details emerged about the night of the shooting.

Clad in head-to-toe combat gear, Holmes allegedly burst into a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," tossed gas canisters into the crowd and opened fire. Friends Stephanie Davies and Allie Young, who attended, said the gunman moved around the room yelling and seemingly targeting people.

"He would shout, 'What are you doing? I said stand up!' And he would pick people up. I saw him stand over someone. I just see hair and him holding the shirt and 'boom,'" said Davies, 21.

Outside Colorado, men accused of making threats during or after other screenings of the Batman film have been arrested in separate incidents in Maine, Arizona and Southern California, underscoring moviegoers' anxieties about security.

In Colorado, the shooting has prompted a sudden surge in gun sales.

In three days, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation approved background checks for 2,887 people who wanted to purchase a firearm. That was 25 percent greater than the average Friday-to-Sunday period in 2012, and 43 percent greater than the same period the week prior.

In Arizona, Jeff Serdy, owner of A.J.I. Sporting Goods in Apache Junction, estimated he saw up to 40 percent more traffic than usual in the two days after the killings.

"I looked out on the floor and said to myself, 'Whoa, look at all these people,'" Serdy said, noting many customers expressed concern that lawmakers may use the shooting to try to pass gun restrictions. Political analysts say there is little appetite in Congress for such laws.
